Departing for Cairo

We are leaving shortly from London to Cairo, where we will be picking up our Toyota Prado (diesels) for an expedition into Egypt's Libyan Desert. The climate in Cairo should be interesting one year almost to the day since the revolution. We hope to have pictures Sunday.

AZLRO Hole in the Rock Adventure opportunity

As part of our partnerships to offer Overland to the Expo adventures, Arizona Land Rover Owners Club is hosting on an epic 4-day journey to two of the most scenic, remote and dramatically beautiful overlanding destinations that are famous far beyond their locale in the Southwestern United States.

The adventure will begin after the 2012 Arizona Land Rover Rally, (May 10–13 in Cottonwood, Arizona).

AZLRO will lead a lucky group through northern Arizona to the amazing scenery of the Arizona/Utah border: Monument Valley. Following a Navajo guide, the group will leave the valley floor to climb high atop Hunt’s Mesa. The vista from Hunt’s Mesa is something you'll remember for a lifetime, and a view that few people will ever experience due to private land laws of the Navajo Nation.

From that majestic point the trip continues north to Halls Crossing on the eastern shores of beautiful Lake Powell, where the famous historic Hole in the Rock Trail begins.

TransAm overlanders: meet the Malessas

We give free attendance to anyone on a RTW or TransAmerica/s journey. We'll be posting them here. Search for the tag Overlanders at the Expo to see them all. "We are a couple from Australia and in 2012/13 we will be making the trip of our lifetime, both of us riding along the Pan American Highway. We are very excited—only 99 days to go. The first part of our journey is N.Y, L.A, Seattle, Alaska Marine Highway, Prudhoe Bay and then down to Ushuaia. Friends of us discovered the Overland Expo, we were very excited to participate and get first-hand information. And It fits perfectly into our plans." - Bjoern & Sigrid Malessa

Vintage "chuck" boxes

Beggy family's chuck box, still in service. Photo courtesy Ed Beggy (click on image to see full size). After we published the review of the Kanz Field Kitchen in the December Overland News, we heard from reviewer Roseann Hanson's brother, Ed Beggy, that the family chuck box about which she waxed nostalgic was not only alive and well, but still in service. The photo Ed shared is from 2005, ready to head out camping in his 1982 FJ40.
