You can never get enough storage in an overland vehicle. By far, it is the one thing in short supply in most builds … from clothing to sports equipment to recovery gear to cooking/provisioning kit to vehicle parts and tools, there are a lot of items you need to carry with you for a successful overland trip.
Good storage solutions are critical for knowing where items are at all times, efficiency in finding things — like your recovery or first aid kit and plain, old safety. Who wants an axe flying through the passenger compartment if you happen to stop quickly? There should be a safe, secure place for these things.
If you’ve ever shopped for storage solutions, you’ll know that they are many and varied — and often you don’t even know where to begin. That’s why I’ve listed some of the storage products I’ve used (or friends have used) over the years and why they work. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but there should be something in here for both two- and four-wheeled adventurers alike.
ARB Outback Drawer System
I’ve been using the ARB Outback Drawer system in my 80 Series Land Cruiser for over 10 years and it literally changed the way I travel. My two-drawer system holds everything I need from tools and parts to kitchen gadgets and propane. The drawers are constructed from galvanized steel. The drawer utilizes a system of sealed roller bearings to provide smooth action, even when loaded to the 220-pound capacity (per drawer). The drawers use a custom made lockable latch to keep the units securely closed and a system of rubber stoppers lock the drawer down in the closed position to ensure a rattle free operation. All drawer units are upholstered inside and out with UV-resistant material for years of worry-free use.

With the DECKED system, you can customize your truck and keep your gear organized, weatherproof, and secure while maintaining full bed use. The DECKED DIY tool box is also durable with a 2000-lb. payload and 200-lb. per drawer rating.

Bestop Universal Storage Lock Box
If you’re looking for a locking solution for small items that you normally keep in your center console, you probably want to consider the Universal Storage Lock Box from Bestop. This storage solution fits a variety of vehicles and features a flip-up piano-hinge lid, pick-resistant key lock and 16-gauge carbon steel construction with ample storage volume. This is a perfect solution for phones, radios, knives, and other smalls that could walk away in a vehicle break in.
Givi Trekker Alaska Side Cases
We all know storage space on an ADV moto is nearly non-existent without the addition of panniers and a top case. Givi’s Trekker Alaska Side cases provide 72 liters of extra lockable storage for your adventure bike, perfect for carrying parts, tools, camping gear, food and cookware for your trips afield.
MSRP: $760.00 each
STEP 22 Gear Hedgehog Toiletry Roll
The STEP 22 Gear Hedgehog Toiletry Roll is seriously one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. It holds all of your toiletry and shower needs in one roll instead of having to search through multiple duffels and backpacks. The Hedgehog features seven usable storage areas, including two removable pouches that are perfect for day excursions, you will find a home for everything!
Front Runner Outfitters Wolf Pack
The Front Runner Outfitters Wolf Pack storage containers ended up being my main solution for kitchen gadgets and non-perishable food storage, and believe me, I tried a lot of different containers in my years on the road. Most of them were either too heavy, or not durable enough for the punishment I put them through on the trail. I’ve owned my Wolf Packs for five years and I don’t think I’ll ever move to another solution. They are that good. My advice? Spring for the Wolf Pack Hi-Lids, they are well worth it!
MSRP: $39.95 each / Wolf Pack Hi-Lids $12.95 each
While this isn’t an exhaustive list of storage solutions, it should be enough to help you get organized and make your vehicle safer, more efficient, and help you know where things belong.
Being organized is critical for any type of long-term overland travel, so make sure you don’t overlook this important planning piece.
See you on the trails!
