You can never get enough storage in an overland vehicle. By far, it is the one thing in short supply in most builds … from clothing to sports equipment to recovery gear to cooking/provisioning kit to vehicle parts and tools, there are a lot of items you need to carry with you for a successful overland trip.

Good storage solutions are critical for knowing where items are at all times, efficiency in finding things — like your recovery or first aid kit and plain, old safety. Who wants an axe flying through the passenger compartment if you happen to stop quickly? There should be a safe, secure place for these things.

If you’ve ever shopped for storage solutions, you’ll know that they are many and varied — and often you don’t even know where to begin. That’s why I’ve listed some of the storage products I’ve used (or friends have used) over the years and why they work. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but there should be something in here for both two- and four-wheeled adventurers alike.

ARB Outback Drawer System

I’ve been using the ARB Outback Drawer system in my 80 Series Land Cruiser for over 10 years and it literally changed the way I travel. My two-drawer system holds everything I need from tools and parts to kitchen gadgets and propane. The drawers are constructed from galvanized steel. The drawer utilizes a system of sealed roller bearings to provide smooth action, even when loaded to the 220-pound capacity (per drawer). The drawers use a custom made lockable latch to keep the units securely closed and a system of rubber stoppers lock the drawer down in the closed position to ensure a rattle free operation. All drawer units are upholstered inside and out with UV-resistant material for years of worry-free use.

Front Runner Outfitters Wolf Pack

The Front Runner Outfitters Wolf Pack storage containers ended up being my main solution for kitchen gadgets and non-perishable food storage, and believe me, I tried a lot of different containers in my years on the road. Most of them were either too heavy, or not durable enough for the punishment I put them through on the trail. I’ve owned my Wolf Packs for five years and I don’t think I’ll ever move to another solution. They are that good. My advice? Spring for the Wolf Pack Hi-Lids, they are well worth it!

MSRP: $39.95 each / Wolf Pack Hi-Lids $12.95 each

While this isn’t an exhaustive list of storage solutions, it should be enough to help you get organized and make your vehicle safer, more efficient, and help you know where things belong.

Being organized is critical for any type of long-term overland travel, so make sure you don’t overlook this important planning piece.

See you on the trails!
