Just because the truck is an EV doesn’t mean it’s an eco-friendly slouch.
To celebrate our nation’s independence, GMC engineers took the HUMMER EV Pickup — the world’s first all-electric hyper-truck — out for a demonstration run of the rig’s launch-control mode, called “Watts to Freedom” — AKA WTF.
Get it? Cute, right?
Despite weighing more than 9,000 pounds, the HUMMER EV Pickup is still able to power to 60 miles per hour from a dead standstill in around three seconds, which is incredibly impressive. In fact, it brings a patriotic tear to my eye.
The HUMMER EV and its 35-inch tires can seemingly defy physics by jumping to highway cruising speed faster than you can read this sentence because of its three onboard electric motors, which are powered by GM’s Ultium Drive system. All told, the HUMMER EV churns out 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 foot-pounds of torque. For those keeping track, that’s more torque than generated during an 2.0 earthquake on the Richter scale. Probably.
Here’s how Al Oppenheiser, HUMMER EV chief engineer puts it: “Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement. It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else — purpose-built for straight-line fun.”
Is it necessary for a pickup to reach 60 in 3.0 seconds? Not one bit. Is it neat. You bet. Happy fourth of July!
