The Mitsubishi Pajero Is Back With Serious Off-Road Hardware

Mitsubishi Motors has officially unveiled the all-new Pajero, bringing one of the brand’s most recognizable 4×4 nameplates into a new generation. The redesigned cross-country SUV will launch first in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia, before expanding to roughly 100 markets beginning in fiscal 2027.

For overlanders, the important news is that Mitsubishi hasn’t turned the Pajero into another soft-roader. Underneath is a ladder-frame chassis paired with an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a new five-link solid rear axle. Power comes from a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel producing up to 480 Nm, or about 354 lb-ft, of torque, paired with a new eight-speed automatic.

The Pajero also combines Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system with Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC). Drivers can choose 2H, 4H, 4HLc with the center differential locked, or 4LLc with low-range gearing. Seven drive modes cover Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock.

Trail numbers include 230 mm, or about 9.1 inches, of ground clearance, a 30.4-degree approach angle, 22.6-degree breakover angle and 25.8-degree departure angle. A 3D Multi Around Monitor also includes an under-floor view to help drivers see terrain hidden directly ahead of and beneath the vehicle.

Inside, the three-row Pajero seats seven and adds a pair of available 14.3-inch displays. Mitsubishi has even brought its classic triple-gauge concept into the digital age with a Multi-Meter that can display altitude, compass heading, temperature, pitch and roll angles, and other useful information when exploring off pavement.

Mitsubishi has not announced the new Pajero for the U.S. market, but with its combination of proper four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, useful trail technology and seven-passenger practicality, it certainly looks like a compelling option for the overland crowd. We’ll be crossing our fingers that the Pajero eventually finds its way stateside.
