Best Rigs of Overland Expo East 2026

Overland Expo East 2026 wrapped, and what a way to end the season. We caught up with friends, saw some awesome gear debuts, and of course, there were hundreds of incredible rigs. As always it’s nearly impossible to see every build at Overland Expo, but we took some time to scour the exhibitor aisles and camping areas to pick out some of our favorites. Presented in no particular order here, some of the best rigs at Overland Expo East 2026.

Ultimate Alu-Cab Land Rover Defender

This may be the vehicle I’ve been most excited to feature in the Best Rigs of Overland Expo roundup. This 1989 Defender 110 was imported by Rin of OK4WD, and since then it has seen an incredibly comprehensive overhaul. I was lucky enough to check it out when it was torn down to nearly the frame a couple of years ago, and since then Rin has upgraded, replaced, and customized nearly every conceivable part. To just hit the highlights, it features a R2.8 Cummins Swap paired with a R380 HD Transmission, Puma Axles, Powerbrake 6 Piston Brakes, an Alu-Cab Icarus Roof Conversion, a Front Runner SL2 Roof Rack, a GP Factor interior that includes a couch, sink,  stove, and water tank, and a National Luna 50 liter dual-zone fridge, and a Redarc system keeps accessories runnign with a 120w Solar Panel, a Manager 75, and an Alpha 150ah battery. The conversion provides a massive living space, and everything is optimized for storage and functionality. It’s one of the most well-designed full custom rigs we’ve seen.

Dirtbox Overland/ Couch Offroad – INEOS on Portals

We’ve seen dozens of awesome INEOS vehicles this year, and even featured a few in our other Best Rigs of Overland Expo roundups, but this might just be the most modified. Dubbed the “INEOG,” this is an incredibly capable and heavily modified version of the Quartermaster. Probably the most obvious departure from stock, the custom portal axles provide 4.7 inches of additional ground clearance and gear reduction to accommodate 37-inch tires. A central tire inflation system, custom beadlock wheels, adjustable piggyback reservoir shocks, and heavy-duty rock sliders add even more capability. The exterior features custom bumpers, front and rear winches, and a modular flatbed. The custom-built pop-top Dirtbox camper weighs in at only 1,240 pounds fully equipped. It offers an impressive amount of living space, including sleeping accommodations for multiple people, a refrigerator, a convertible dinette, interior storage, and a toilet. In terms of long-term livability matched with off-road capability, this might just be one of the best rigs we’ve seen in a while. Be sure to follow Couch Off-road to see it in action.

Customized 100 Series Land Cruiser

Land Cruisers are always a popular choice at Overland Expo, and we spotted this well-outfitted example in the camping area. Unfortunately, we couldn’t catch up with the owner, but this example was too good not to include. The Cruiser Company front bumper, dual rear swing-outs, Nomad wheels, dual awnings, GMRS radio, and rock sliders- if I were going to build a 100, this is exactly how I’d do it. The OEM plus look is capable without too much modification, and this Cruiser should be covering miles of trails for years to come. Bonus points for bringing a couple of bikes along for exploring away from basecamp.

Jeep Gladiator Farout Concept

Jeep always has awesome concept trucks, and it was great to see one of our all-time favorites rolled out for Overland Expo East. The Farout Concept is based on a Gladiator powered by the 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel, and it’s rolling on 37-inch tires and includes a 2-inch Fox lift from the Jeep Performance Parts program. Trail protection and recovery duties are covered by a Rubicon steel bumper and a 12,000 lb. Warn winch. On the back, a custom AT Overland Habitat provides a spacious living area, and the bed is outfitted with a custom wooden interior. Plus, it features all of our favorite accessories for extended backcountry travel, like a fridge, a stove, plenty of storage, and table space. Even after seeing these concepts online, it’s great to check them out in person.

Custom Rover Vans Sprinter

Sprinter vans are popular adventure platforms for full-time travelers and weekend warriors. We’ve seen a lot of great ones, and Rover Vans brought an exceptional example to Overland Expo East. Rover Vans offer custom and semi-custom builds, and this van is a great starting point for dialing in what travelers need as they refine their own systems. Available in two- and four-person configurations with crash-tested seating mounted to airline tracks, it makes for a flexible floorplan. This is the Scout model with a side galley, and the two storage boxes in the back provide plenty of organization for gear. Everything in this van was well done, and it’s obvious the Rover Vans team takes plenty of time and doesn’t skimp on their rigs.

Echo XV Custom Expedition Camper

The DIY Area is always an amazing source of inspiration, and this amazing rig got plenty of attention all weekend long. A tow camper paired up with a box truck is apparently the starting point, but there’s obviously lots of hours and even more passion poured into this build. Dubbed the Echo XV, this rig is outfitted with a fully custom interior, a liftgate turned moto-hauler, and even a side-deck. Owners Tyler and Sarah have just started their full-time travel journey after a nearly four-year-long build process. We can’t wait to see where they take this awesome rig.

Inciarte4x4/Taruca 2500 HD

Full-sized rigs remain popular, and with more payload, comfortable interiors for long trips, and growing aftermarket support, it’s easy to see why. Starting with the exterior, it features an Explore Elevated bed topper, Taruca Adventure Gear rooftop tent, 270-degree awning, and shower enclosure. A BDS lift, FOX suspension, Method wheels, and Nitto tires handle the rough terrain, while Addictive Desert Designs bumpers, a 13,000-pound winch, and RHINO USA recovery gear add extra capability. Inside, a Goose Gear rear seat delete, DECKED drawer system, and ICECO fridge provide the storage and refrigeration you’d need for a long trip. REDARC power management, solar charging, and Expion360 lithium batteries keep everything running off-grid with a whopping 900 Ah capacity. You can learn more by following Carlos on inciarte4x4.

Roam2Refuel Subaru Legacy GT Wagon

We’ve covered plenty of great adventure-wagon builds in the past, but this may be one of the most outfitted and striking. John Walker, aka Roam2Refuel, has spared no expense in terms of both the time and money invested in this Subaru. First off, it’s right-hand drive converted and powered by a JDM EJ207 that produces 280 horsepower. A Primitive Fab lift kit provides clearance, and all-terrain tires from Nitto keep it ready for any tough tracks. Under the surface, there is a laundry list of mods, but we couldn’t stop finding cool accessories for backcountry capability and comfort as well. A rooftop tent, 14 gallons of onboard water, a 180-degree awning, a hammock stand, hot water heater, a fridge, a dual battery setup, and just about everything else you’d want for extended trips were packed into this adventure-ready Subaru. It’s definitely worth checking out on John’s socials and in person if you get a chance.

Bonus: Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

All weekend long, the Jeep Ride and Drive at Overland Expo East served as a great reminder that stock Jeep JLUs and Gladiators are trail-ready. The Rubicon’s legendary off-road capability is supported by a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, electronic-locking front and rear differentials, and a disconnecting front sway bar for increased wheel travel. It also includes a 4.10 axle gear ratio, upgraded shocks, body-protecting steel rails, and 33-inch all-terrain tires designed for low-speed rock crawling. If you’re looking for a capable rig off the lot, the Rubicon lineup is a great starting point for aspiring overlanders.
