Airstream shook up the compact camper world when it released the Basecamp 16 model in 2016. It quickly became one of the most popular small campers on the market.
The original 16-foot Basecamp is now one of Airstream’s best selling campers, largely due to its stylish design and the fact that it could be towed by small trucks and SUVs. Airstream is expanding on the Basecamp with a new and improved Basecamp 20 providing more room for gear, guests, and adventure.

The new Basecamp 20 not only stretches the Basecamp 16’s length, but also the width and height. The result of exploding the foot print and rearranging the floor plan is a camper capable of sleeping four adults comfortably on opposite ends of the camper to still maintain some privacy. Airstream has always been a proponent of community and bringing travelers together and it shows in the Basecamp dinette design with plenty of room to sit and enjoy dinner or a card game.

Although the Basecamp 20 doesn’t add a bathroom sink to the design, an outdoor shower is a great addition to the utility of the camper. The original basecamp received a face-lift option early on called the X model which provided burlier tires, rock guards, and front window protection that will now be available on the 20-foot model as well. In addition to the same off-road upgrades that the 16X got shortly after release, the 20X will also receive up-sized Goodyear Wrangler tires, a three-inch lift, and relocated hitch jack pad to improve ground-clearance.
The Airstream Basecamp 20 and 20X are not cheap campers starting at $45,900 and $48,900 respectively, but the value of quality craftsmanship and innovation from a company like Airstream, who has been building campers since the 1930’s, is often-times worth the investment.
