This e-Dirt Bike Is a Segway You Won’t Be Embarrassed to Own

When the Segway debuted in 2002, it seemed both futuristic but also desperately dorky — and kind of useless. Not surprisingly, the original product never caught on. And it was discontinued this summer.

The Segway company lives on, however, and has created another electric two-wheel vehicle. This time, though, it’s decided more bad-ass: the Dirt eBike.

Segway’s Dirt eBike comes in two trim levels: x160 and x260.

The x160 is capable of a top speed of 30 miles per hour and has a range of 40 miles. The x260 can reach 47 mph and is said to run 75 miles per charge. Though, like with anything, if you keep your foot in it — or, in this case, your hand — the range will be lower.

Limited range isn’t really a big issue with the Dirt eBike, however. No matter the trim you choose, the Dirt eBike has swappable batteries. So, if you deplete one, you can just slap another one in and continue down the trail.

I am guessing the thing is pretty quick, too. The torque ratings are surprisingly high for such light bikes. The x160 churns out 162 foot-pounds and the x260 boasts 184 ft-lbs. And, remember, electric motors put out 100% torque at zero RPM. So, these things must rip.

As a result of all that torque, the x160 can climb a 35-degree slope. The more powerful x260 can summit a 45-degree slope. The question is: Can you hold on long and hard enough for the bikes to make that kind of ascent?

The Segway Dirt eBike has hydraulic disc brakes and a mono shock in the rear. The bike is constructed forged aluminum alloy. Prices start at $2,999 and they are on sale now.
