At this point, the electric overland rig is not a matter of “if” but “when.” With a number of 100% electric vehicles and hybrid-electric models on the horizon, there are no doubts they will soon appear in the backcountry. While the major brands have bought in with the Jeep 4XE, the Hummer, the Ford Lightning, and most recently the Ford Maverick, Alpha Motor Company has been developing its own line of electric vehicles. Of the three retro-styled models the Wolf truck line is the most viable option for overland travel, but honestly, I wouldn’t mind some backcountry adventures in the rally-inspired Jax. We’ll save that for another day.

The most striking feature of the Wolf and Wolf+ is their shared vintage styling that somehow looks like it could be at home in 1978 or 2078. With expected availability sometime in 2023, it may not be long before one of these compact haulers zooms by you on the road. Pricing will range between $36,000 and $46,000 with a number of options to customize the electric vehicle to the user. Specs include 250-275 mile range, dual-motor four-wheel drive or single motor rear-wheel drive, an impressive 0-60 mph of 5.9 seconds, and a towing capacity of 6,724 lbs.

The Wolf+ comes in between the Ford Ranger and the recently announced Ford Maverick with a total length of 203-inches. Mounted tool storage is available at the front of the 5.5-foot bed. The Wolf+ also includes a roof rack and enclosed storage under the hood. The AMC website includes photos of a bed-mounted solar panel, but there’s no accompanying information. Hopefully, this will be an option from the factory, and ideally it would be a foldable panel that could be deployed in camp.
The interior styling is just as unique as the exterior with a simple design based around an 11-inch center dash display. The rest of the interior is rather modern with a minimalistic design that trims away any superfluous elements.

Last week AMC announced a partnership with Heimplanet. In addition to the two-door Wolf and the four-passenger capable Wolf+, the Wolf+Cloudbreak includes the Heimplanet Cave inflatable tent. With a canopy that connects to the bed the Wolf+ and Cave tent make a seamless storage and living space. We’re curious to see more details on this option, and the Wolf+ truck in general, as AMC gets closer to their production date.
While a lot remains to be seen, the range, size, and cargo capability seem to check all of the boxes of a small functional truck that would be more than capable on some overnight overland adventures. The mysterious large solar panel could mean ample in-the-field charging, but again, that’s speculation. The styling and design set the Wolf+ apart, and I hope that everything comes together for AMC as they approach their 2023 deadline.
