Tom Roszko set out to build an adventure vehicle that could take him anywhere and do it reliably and with style. He found that he could build his dream vehicle on an unlikely chassis, a medium duty 4×4 ambulance.
Tom spared little expense when converting his ambulance into a rugged, off-road capable, home on wheels. The Lost Box, as it has been named, is equipped with comprehensive off-grid systems throughout including water filtration, a toilet and shower, as well as enough solar and battery capacity to run a small village. The powertrain remains mostly stock as the Duramax diesel produces plenty of power to get Tom to the most remote areas of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. An upgrade was due for the small-ish tires that came on the rig and Tom went with the most practical tire he could fit while still match the GVWR of the vehicle.
You’ve possibly seen Tom at Overland Expo as a volunteer or in the Virtual Overland Expo Showcase that premiered May 16, 2020. All of the content from Virtual Overland Expo including the virtual campground, and presentations and roundtables, and a walk around of The Lost Box Ambulance are still available online for free HERE.
Tom’s adventures take him all over the world and notably all over North America in The Lost Box Ambulance. You can follow along on Tom’s travels and build on Instagram @the_lost_box and on his website https://lostbox.org. Follow along as he lives outside the box, in a box.
