GMC and Oregon-based overlanding specialty rig builder EarthCruiser have taken the wraps off an upfit package built around the new all-electric Hummer EV pickup truck.
Called the GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser, it gives the new Hummer a broad suite of gear for spending time far from the pavement. EarthCruiser’s overlanding package for the Hummer EV was not developed in direct association with GMC, but the car company is actively promoting it.

The kit will include a carbon fiber structure that is integrated into the Hummer’s chassis and extends to the front of the cab. The prototype is a pop-top design instead of a wedge RTT and comes in at just under 12 feet tall when all set up. Packed down, it’s under nine feet tall. At 217 inches long, there’s a lot of room up top to sleep two in comfort, and 80 inches of headroom standing in the Hummer’s 6-foot bed. The pop top material is insulated and features a waterproofed multi-layer fabric with large zip-out windows.

Amenities include a flat pack toilet, 5-gallon freshwater tank, 12-volt refrigerator and freezer, 12-volt water heater, outdoor shower, induction cooktop, and a sink. A table and multiple storage areas are also included, along with two swing-up exterior storage bins. There’s more storage under the bed area and dimmable interior lighting. A small touchscreen gives control over the various bits.

You would think that electrical power while camping would come from the enormous Ultium battery that powers the Hummer EV, but that’s not the case, technically. Instead, The camper section relies on a built-in 460 Amp-hour lithium pack connected to a 1,500-watt inverter. It was not immediately clear if there was some way to charge the camper battery (or run other gear) from the Hummer’s native 120-volt power outlets, but that seems like an obvious solution if the power runs low.
GMC says the Hummer has a 19.2kWh internal charging module, and there are 120 volt outlets in the cabin and pickup bed. A large 605-watt solar array on the pop top’s roof recharges the camper’s battery but not the Hummer itself, and there are also typical 120-volt and USB power points throughout the camper. Standard RV connections are also included.

The Hummer pickup seats five, can go up to 381 miles on a charge, depending on the version, and includes the ability to “crab” via a four-wheel steering system. GMC says the Hummer’s multiple motors put out a claimed 1,000 horsepower and over 11,000 pound-feet of torque (yes, eleven thousand) in top 3X trim. The active air ride suspension can lift the chassis six inches on command, and GMC lists ground clearance as 10.1 inches. The rear wheels, driven by a single motor, include a lockable differential while the front wheels are driven by two independent electric motors. GMC claims an unladen 0-60 time in the 3-second range. A base Hummer lists for just over $98,000.
EarthCruiser is taking refundable $100 deposits for the Hummer kit, but pricing has not been announced. More details are expected to be revealed soon.
