A couple of months ago, we reported on an interesting patent filed by Jeep that showed a rooftop tent integrated into a JLU hardtop, and now those simple line drawings have made their debut! Last weekend at Overland Expo West, Jeep Performance Parts debuted the Awning and Rooftop Tent, aka ARTT, concept that was developed in partnership with Dometic.
This all-in-one awning and rooftop tent system seamlessly integrates into the Jeep Wrangler, and at Overland Expo West, the ARTT was mounted to the 4xe Sunchaser concept that originally debuted at Easter Jeep Safari. The ARTT addresses the issue of poor aerodynamics and added high-mounted weight normally associated with rooftop tents, and packing the ARTT into a carbon fiber shell that only adds minimal height to the stock JLU hardtop.
“The lightweight and compact JPP Awning and Rooftop Tent concept is the perfect accessory for adventure-seeking Jeep Wrangler owners, whether they are overlanding across long distances or decide to go on a spur-of-the-moment quick weekend getaway,” said Mike Koval, senior vice president and head of sales operations, Jeep brand. “We’re excited to see consumer reaction at Overland Expo West to our newest innovative concept for our enthusiast Jeep brand customers.”

Beyond the impressive stowed size, the ARTT’s cantilever design and internal access to the sleeping area provide exceptional livability to the design. With room for a queen-sized mattress, the ARTT is perfect for two adventurers or a solo traveler looking for a spacious sleeping system. The tent also incorporates Dometic’s AIR Frame Inflation technology and an integrated 270-degree awning.
The JPP ARTT concept system was developed as part of the Stellantis Star*Up intrapreneurship program, an idea incubator for Stellantis employees encouraging their entrepreneurial spirit and consumer-focused mindset, creating innovative mobility products and services.
We think an overland-focused product like this, directly from the manufacturer, is a huge step for the industry. Adding the ARTT to a JLU would give you a huge head start on having everything you need for comfortable extended stays in the backcountry. At Overland Expo West, a QR code invited attendees to participate in a survey to see how successful this product would be in the overlanding community. The survey was only available for the duration of the Expo, but we don’t doubt this product will be a big hit with Jeep fans and overlanders alike.
