Breathe a Little Easier with the New Magnaflow Overland Exhaust

Despite not being the first modification one typically thinks of when building out a vehicle for overland travel, if you are a more ambitious off-roader the benefits of fitting a new exhaust system might persuade you to make the change. Some kits exist for popular overland vehicles, but many are made for the trail and will rattle your eardrums with exhaust drone on the highway. Magnaflow has seemingly  solved this problem and a couple of others with their new Overland Exhaust Series

Magnaflow set out to design an exhaust system for the 4th Generation Toyota 4Runner, Lexus GX470 and 460 as well as the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that is free-flowing giving an opportunity for small performance gains over the stock exhaust. It is unlikely that you will notice any extra power or efficiency from a cat-back system, but a few horsepower and maybe one mile-per-gallon is possible. In stock configuration, most OEM exhaust systems are sufficient but if you plan to add a supercharger, bigger gains are possible.

A benefit of the new exhaust series from Magnaflow is the high-clearance design that hugs the undercarriage and recoups precious inches of departure angle. With an integrated 2.5-inch angled exhaust tip, your departure angle is preserved, even with an aftermarket bumper ensuring that you will scrape armor before you bend up your exhaust pipe. The stock muffler on the 4th Generation 4Runner and Lexus GX470 is massive and dominates a large section of the undercarriage. This compact, stainless steel design fits better and minimizes the chances that you will snag on rocks, or other obstacles.

Where the Magnaflow Overland series really resonates is with the humble sound at idle and cruising speed and a more throaty tone at higher RPM’s. The Overland series fills a gap in the Magnaflow line as slightly louder than stock, but not as aggressive as the Magnaflow Rock Crawler series. Sound clips reveal a pleasant tone with no obvious drone or rasp at high RPM’s and are available on the Magnaflow website for a variety of platforms. I don’t need a new exhaust system on my GX, but the sound of the 4.7-liter with this kit is very enticing.

Each Magnaflow product is backed by a limited lifetime warranty and is made in the U.S.A. Magnaflow has partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant a tree for each Overland Series exhaust kit sold. The Magnaflow Overland Series kit for 2003 – 2009 Lexus GX 470, 2003 – 2009 Toyota 4Runner and 2010 -2021 Lexus GX 460 cat-back exhaust system is priced at $650 and the 2012- 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Overland Series cat-back exhaust system is $599.
