Narwhal Brings its Carbon-fiber Topper to Overland Expo Mountain West

Truck toppers are nothing new in the overland world, but Narwhal Truck Toppers is taking a decidedly different approach to the category. The Colorado-based company made its first appearance at Overland Expo Mountain West this year, showcasing its lightweight carbon fiber topper platform and giving attendees a closer look at its production model for the Ford F-150 and Ranger.

Rather than relying on the fiberglass, aluminum, or steel construction commonly found in truck caps, Narwhal builds its topper around a full carbon fiber monocoque shell with an integrated EXO Frame roof structure. Depending on truck and configuration, the topper weighs approximately 100 to 160 pounds while offering a claimed 600-pound dynamic and 1,100-pound static roof-load capacity. That combination should be particularly appealing to overlanders trying to preserve precious payload for passengers, camping equipment, water, recovery gear, and everything else that gets loaded onto a truck for a trip.

Utility extends beyond the lightweight construction. Large gull-wing side panels provide easy access to gear inside the bed, while integrated internal and external L-Track creates mounting points for accessories. One of the more interesting features is the removable rear panel, which allows owners to quickly convert the enclosed topper for hauling bikes or oversized cargo. An available removable roof hatch can also provide access to the roof, creating an elevated platform for photography, spotting, or accessing roof-mounted equipment.

Pricing starts at $7,985, putting the Narwhal firmly in the premium end of the topper market. Ford Ranger and F-150 applications are currently in production, with the Toyota Tacoma next in line and additional fitments for popular midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty trucks planned.
