Nissan has announced a number of concept vehicles that will be displayed at next month’s Tokyo Auto Salon 2022. Amongst them are two fascinating van concepts with plenty of overland potential.
The first, dubbed the Nissan Caravan Mountain Base concept, is built around the long-standing Caravan platform. However, the Mountain Base is decked out with equipment that takes it far beyond the basic van that’s ubiquitous in many parts of the world.

A sizable foldout roof-mounted solar panel should provide plenty of power. Inside, an integrated bench, a hex-grid wall, and recessed lighting combine to create a great mobile office. The interior’s digital fireplace and wood paneling make this feel like a cabin on wheels. The exterior continues this theme with a wood grain wrap that gives the Mountain Base concept a decidedly vintage vibe.

The Nissan Caravan Myroom concept goes in an entirely different direction with an understated exterior but plenty of creature comforts on the inside. The bed stows under the floor to provide an airy interior. Modular bookshelves and cupboards sit opposite of a large window. All in all, the livable space is truly impressive.

In the perfect world, or at least in an overland-focused one, a van with characteristics of both the Mountain Base and the Myroom would be ready to roll off of the showroom floor. The solar capabilities of the Mountain Base and the modular interior of the Myroom would make a great a basecamp for just about any vanlifer. Unfortunately, both models are only concepts, and the production Nissan Caravan isn’t currently available in the United States. Nonetheless, one can dream, and maybe some of these exciting features will trickle down to future models that are available at our local Nissan dealership.
