The Rivian R3X is the Sporty Little Hatchback You Didn’t Know You Needed

Rivian’s brand-new all electric compact crossover, the R3X, is heading into production in 2026, according to Car and Driver. That’s good news for anyone in the market for a slightly more rugged than usual, entry-level electric hatchback.

The Rivian R3X was just displayed at the Chicago Auto Show, where showgoers were able to see a firsthand preview of Rivian’s adventure-focused variant of the company’s upcoing R3 hatchback. The sporty hatchback has a lifted silhouette, a tri-motor powertrain, and an aesthetic that is somehow both nostalgic and futuristic.

Although it’s certainly not equipped for living off-grid for weeks at a time, the upcoming R3X does have its charms: It’ll be the most adventurous version of the R3 model, featuring three electric motors, a higher ground clearance, and wider wheels and tires than the base R3 model.

Rivian touts the R3X as, “a performance variant of R3, offering even more dynamic abilities both on and off-road” — which in our eyes, translates to: an ideal little rig for weekend camping trips. The R3 is Rivian’s smallest SUV to date, and utilizes the same platform as the compact R2 SUV, with the R3’s wheelbase measuring five inches shorter than the R2’s. Single-, dual- and tri-motor options will be available, and the largest battery option is supposed to provide an estimated driving range of over 300 miles.

Rivian will debut the performance-oriented R3X first, with vehicles entering production in 2026, followed by the base R3 model. The R3X is projected to fall into the $45,000 price range, but as of now, nothing is set in stone.

If you’re looking for a daily driver that can also handle shorter camping trips and a little off-roading, the Rivian R3X might be just what you’re looking for. You can find more information on Rivian’s website.
