Meet the the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup truck.
After nearly forty years of dormancy, Scout Motors has unveiled two new vehicles, both electric: the the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup truck. The original Scout helped to jump-start the SUV movement decades ago — and it looks like the two new Scout models are picking up the (electric) torch in 2024. If you were into this Jeep competitor in the 70s, you’ll be into the newest generation. Let’s meet the new models.

First, a little history: The Scout brand died in 1980 with International Harvester and was reborn via an acquisition by Volkswagen in 2020, and the new models strive to stay true to Scout’s origins. Both the Traveler SUV and the Terra are body-on-frame, solid rear-axle trucks. They both feature robust towing capacity as well — up to 7,000 pounds and 10,000 for the Traveler and Terra, respectively. Both vehicles also feature plenty of off-road details, including 35-inch tires, over 12 inches of ground clearance, and an off-road-ready suspension setup. Scout also included front and rear lockers, a front sway bar disconnect and the ability to wade through up to almost three feet of water.

In terms of acceleration — which is always a hot topic when it comes to EVs — Scout claims that the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup can go from 0-60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds, which puts these vehicles in the top of their class. This is made possible by the nearly 1,000 lb.-ft. generated by the four-wheel-drive system — in other words, these vehicles are torquey and ready to rip.

Range is always top of mind for any overlander looking to go electric, and Scout made sure each of its new models could go the distance. The fully electric variants of each vehicle will offer approximately 350 miles of range, with extended range options likely to deliver over 500 miles using a built-in gas-powered generator.
The aesthetics of the Traveler and Terra is a mix of modernity and nostalgia, relying heavily on Scout’s retro styling and vibes while also focusing on the future. The Terra features a 5.5-foot bed in the back, and the Traveler SUV wears a full-size spare tire.

One of the most compelling aspects of Scout’s new truck and SUV has nothing to do with range, aesthetics, or acceleration — rather, it’s the fact that the brand will be building the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck in the United States. Specifically, the vehicles will be built at a plant in Columbia, South Carolina, as part of a $2 billion investment from VW. According to Scout, the plant has the potential to create 4,000 or more permanent jobs and, at full capacity, could produce more than 200,000 Scout vehicles per year.
The Traveler and Terra will go into production in 2027 out of South Carolina, and you can reserve yours today. Reservation orders are $100, and the anticipated entry price for the Traveler starting as low as $50,000, and the Terra at $51,500, with retail prices projected to begin under $60,000.
To wrap it all up: the Scout Traveler and Terra blend old-school cool and new-school power, and do it at a competitive price point while adding American jobs in the process. We can’t think of a better combination than that.
