Toyota just announced that the trail-ready and ever-capable Trailhunter package is hitting the Tundra. We were there when the Trailhunter Tacoma made its public debut at Overland Expo West, and we’re just as excited to check out the full-sized version at Overland Expo Mountain West this weekend in Loveland, Colorado, August 21-23.
Before we dive into the specifics of the Trailhunter option, the entire Tundra lineup will be getting an updated front end. We can help, but notice that the 2027 is taking at least a few design cues from the Sequoia, and that’s not a bad thing. We got some time behind the wheel of a TRD Pro Sequoia a couple of years ago, and the performance and appearance impressed us. Now the Tundra is sporting the same look with a new center low bumper, reshaped lights, and new hexagonal styling in the grille. The updates aren’t all aesthetic, though. The integrated LED light bar has been updated for brighter output, and the available RIGID fog lights provide excellent illumination in poor visibility.

The new Trailhunter package includes all of this and so much more. Starting from the ground up, the Tundra Trailhunter is rolling on Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires matched to package-exclusive bronze wheels. An upgraded Old Man Emu suspension is ready for the toughest tracks and provides additional lift for added ground clearance, more articulation, and improved trail geometry.
Up front, factory recovery hooks are ready for when things go a little sideways, and underneath, skid plates provide protection on rugged tracks. The Tundra Trailhunter also features the latest generation of Toyota’s suite of off-road-focused technology, including Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. These, paired with a locking rear differential, keep the Tundra stable across a wide variety of off-road challenges. Rounding out the overland-friendly features is an optional 2.4kW inverter on the i-Force Max grades. This can be used to power tools or plenty of creature comforts in the backcountry.
The latest generation of Toyota’s legendary full-sized platform has already proven to be a popular platform for overland builds, and the new Trailhunter offering just provides drivers with a more capable starting point. We can’t wait to see it in person this weekend.
