Community Spotlight: Ashley & Austins’ 1982 Chinook

At just about every Overland Expo, a couple of vehicles really stand out. It may be a great build from a company, a tried and true model that’s put together just right, or it might be something totally unique that stops you dead in your tracks. The latter is most definitely the case with Ashley and Austins’ 1982 Chinook.

Well, 1982 Chinook isn’t 100% accurate. This rig is made up of a 1982 Toyota truck, the camper from a 1979 Chinook, and it’s all powered by an engine from a 1999 4Runner. To top it all off, the paint job is inspired by a similar pattern from a 1980 SR5 Toyota pickup. This is truly a unique rig that stands out in a crowd.

At each of the Overland Expos that Ashley and Austin attended, you could usually find them walking attendees, staff, and even vendors through their truck. Also, after each event, it popped up on innumerable social media posts.

With custom-built bumpers, a renovated camper interior, and, most importantly, a sense of adventure, this couple is ready to explore as much as they can in this awesome rig. They’ve set their sights on exploring the United States and then heading towards Central America. We wish them all the best, and we can’t wait to hear about their journey.
