Make Room in Your Camp Kitchen for this Portable Pellet BBQ

Everyone has a propane grille in their overlanding gear set. But who has a pellet barbecue? Soon you might.

It’s clear that smartphones are only going to get incrementally better from here on out. With this realization top of mind, I assume, minds of our generation’s greatest designers and engineers have now turned their creative powers toward everyday items.

Virtually not one week goes by that doesn’t bring with it some sort of new, smaller, more powerful — and portable — gadget. For example, Amazon’s Alexa can now measure cups of water using your faucet. And overlanding fridges now have Bluetooth. These are just two examples from the top of my head.

The latest gadget to get the 21st century portable rethink is the pellet smoker grille called the ASMOKE. And it’s exactly what you imagine it to be: a portable, electric-powered pellet barbecue grille.

The ASMOKE (don’t ask me what that means or why it’s in caps like they’re yelling at us) measures in at just below 25 inches wide, 17.5 inches high and 14.5 inches deep. In spite of that diminutive frame, it offers a 256-square-inch cooking surface. And it only weighs a modest 45 pounds. It’s definitely small and light enough to fit in your rig.

It grill seems relatively easy to use. Pour in up to four pounds of wood pellets. Plug it in. And select the temperature on the digital readout. It heats up surprisingly quickly — it can hit 350 degrees in 20 minutes. Then just toss on your grillables.

Most of us overlanders relish adding some new, high-tech gadget to our kit — especially one that makes our campsite meals that much tastier. So, I hope to see a few of you add an ASMOKE to your camp kitchen — not least because I would like to steal a bratwurst or three off of you.

Not surprisingly, the ASMOKE has been a huge hit on IndieGoGo. As this is written it’s reached $1,039,636 of its $10,000 goal.

The planned retail price is $515. Folks who buy in now can get one for $346. The ASMOKE is shipping now. If you do pick one up, please hit me up so I can come enjoy it with you.
