Alu-Cab is an innovative and quality-driven company making some of the best overlanding gear on the market today. We turned to the South African company for sleeping quarters, some relief from the sun (or rain) and a private, spacious place to wash up.
Alu-Cab 3R Expedition Rooftop Tent
The Alu-Cab 3R Rooftop tent is the tent for explorers. Hand-built in South Africa and tested in the harshest of environments. But, there is more to a rooftop tent than solely providing a place to sleep. Alu-Cab exceeded in designing a tent with both integrated luxuries and the ability to add aftermarket accessories.
Out of the box, the 3R comes pre-wired with reading lights, 12-volt sockets, and two USB charging ports, as well as a built-in solar panel port on the roof of the tent. While on the topic of the roof of the 3R tent, Alu-Cab designed the roof to support 110 lbs of equipment while the tent is open. This is made possible thanks to a robust integrated track system to which you mount load bars and two heavy-duty gas struts designed to assist in opening the tent when weighed down.
Additional benefits that come standard on the Alu-Cab 3R rooftop tent are integrated heating / AC ports on both sides of the tent that can accept up to a 4-in-diameter hose, which accommodates most portable heaters and AC units. When it comes to staying dry on those rainy days at camp, the 3R comes standard with a roll-up rear rain fly and a removable rain fly that covers the ladder, keeping entering and exiting the tent dry and safe.
There are even more options that come standard in the 3R tent, such as the high-density foam mattress, storage cubbies found on the ceiling of the tent, and an air vent found on the uppermost section of the tent fabric to keep condensation to a minimum and provide fresh air.
Keeping the spirit of modification going Alu-Cab designed bolt-on accessories to enhance your base camp with a tilting backrest and a drop-down table for those slow mornings or cozy movie nights in the tent. To expand your living space footprint, Alu-Cab’s 270° Shadow awing and Shower Cube can be installed on the tent’s exterior to provide over 32 Sq ft of covered living space.

Alu-Cab 270° Shadow Awning
From hot summer days to the surprise downpour you didn’t see in the forecast, no job is more important than that of an awning. If it’s casting shade to get out of the blazing sun or reprieve from the rain, no awning does it better than the Alu-Cab 270° Shadow Awning.
Equally as important is how quickly the Shadow Awning sets up. In less than two minutes, the Shadow awning is fully deployed. There are no guy wires and no anchors; simply open the travel bag and deploy the fabric. In climate weather, what good is having an awning if you are drenched by the time it is set up? The four heavy-duty aluminum arms can withstand the weight of standing water and large gusts of wind. If the condition worsens, the center arm does have a telescoping leg that can be deployed, as well as anchor straps at the end of each arm.
The 270° Shadow awning fabric casts over 32 Sp ft of shade thanks to its highly reflective ripstop material that significantly drops the temperature underneath the awning. The Alu-Cab 270° Shadow Awning is perfect for a trail-side lunch, tailgate, or base camp during an adventure.

The main support works great as a storage shelf for shower necessities while showering, and the velcro ceiling easily attaches for those rainy days.
