Overlanders needing a pickup bed insert that can function as both a camper and work truck have a new choice from South Africa-based Alu-Cab. Called the ModCAP Canopy, the insert can be configured for camping but also serve as a secure storage space for work gear at a remote site. The ModCAP also features a new design, which the company says introduces a “smooth-formed finish” that gives owners “enhanced aerodynamics and improved fuel efficiency.”
The ModCAP Canopy can be ordered with or without windows depending on how it will be used, and the company says the system has “unmatched modularity” for setting it up as a camper or work platform – or both. A large rear door makes getting in and out easy, and Alu-Cab offers numerous “standalone” modules that include slide-out drawers, a tiltable fridge carrier, storage containers, a kitchen module, and more. They can be added, removed, or re-arranged quickly, as needed.
The smooth roof of the ModCAP Canopy will accept solar panels for power and crossbars for adding racks and gear mounts. The side panels swing open to make bed access and gear mounts easy to get to from inside or outside of the ModCAP Canopy.
Then, when it’s time to leave the worksite behind and hit the trails, you can drop the tent body onto the ModCap, and you will have a canopy camper that allows internal access to the sleeping area. From there you can dial in your interior with plenty of creature comforts, like those that are available for the current generation of AluCab Canopy Campers.
According to the Alu-Cab website, the Canopy will be available in several versions, including an “extra cab roof” and “double cab roof” versions. It will fit a wide variety of trucks from about 2005 to the present. Alu-Cab does not sell directly to consumers, but our friends at OK4WD have more information and a product page for the ModCap available now.
