Navigation & Communication: Garmin

One of the most trusted names in GPS navigation and satellite communication is Garmin – maker of top-tier products for motorcyclists and adventurers of all kinds. Garmin navigators help you find your way and their satellite communicators help you stay in touch when you’re far from home. The Ultimate Overland Motorcycle will be fitted with a Garmin zūmo XT and we’ll keep a Garmin inReach Mini on us wherever we’re riding.

Zumo XT

The rugged zūmo XT all-terrain motorcycle navigator is built for adventure. With an ultra-bright 5.5” display, it is also glove-friendly and rain-resistant. Built to withstand all kinds of weather, extreme temperatures, and vibrations, the zūmo XT is the perfect navigation solution for the Ultimate Adventure Motorcycle.

We’ll be planning our most adventurous routes with Garmin’s turn-by-turn directions for on-road navigation. The topographic and BirdsEye Satellite Imagery are perfect for off-road guidance. There’s no subscription necessary to access a wide variety of Garmin services. You can manage and review routes, tracks, and waypoints across the navigator, as well as via smartphone and computer by using the Garmin Explore ecosystem.

Needless to say, we’re particularly excited about Garmin’s Adventurous Routing options to find the most exciting riding on curvy roads and the preloaded off-road topographic maps for our off-piste adventures. Other great safety features of the zūmo XT include BLUETOOTH hands-free calling, rider alerts, automatic incident notifications, and pairing with the compatible inReach satellite communicator.

inReach Mini

The inReach Mini is a palm-sized satellite communicator that lets you stay in touch around the world. Instead of relying on cell coverage, information is transferred via the global Iridium satellite network, to keep you connected no matter how far afield you find yourself. This rugged little communicator requires a satellite subscription that allows for messaging, location sharing, emergency SOS alerts and more.

When riding, we’ll be keeping the inReach in our jacket pocket, rather than storing it somewhere on the bike. That way, if a situation arises where we become separated from the motorcycle, the inReach, with all of its safety features, stays with the rider.

The inReach Mini has two-way messaging, allowing you to exchange text messages, post to social media, or communicate with loved ones. In case of emergency, you can trigger an interactive SOS message to GEOS, Garmin’s International Emergency Response Coordination Center with professional 24/7 global monitoring and response center.

Location tracking with the inReach allows you to share your whereabouts with those at home or others out in the field. The internal, rechargeable lithium battery gives you up to 90 hours’ use at the default 10-minute tracking mode and up to 24 days in power saving mode.
