For the most part, if you want to bring some rideable toys on your big adventure, you’ll need a trailer to haul them. No surprise there and there are many to choose from, but Mission Overland had the bright idea to combine carrying your motorcycle, mountain bike, ATV or other large-sized cargo with a pop-up tent and all the other expected comforts of an overland camping trailer.
Called the Trail Dog, the Canadian company’s compact yet highly versatile $40,000CAD trailer is just under 16 feet long but has the capacity to swallow up most ATVs, motorbikes, and more while sleeping two (or more) in comfort in the pop-up section above the cargo space. It’s not exactly a new idea, but it’s one we don’t see very often, and Mission has done a good job executing the design challenges for something fairly niche.
The 2,200-pound trailer features a steel welded frame, all-terrain tires on alloy wheels, Timbren axle-less suspension, 360 hitch, 16 inches of ground clearance, insulated walls, and half a ton of cargo carrying capacity. There’s enough room inside the 93 by 54 by 49-inch cargo section for a motorcycle and mountain bike (or inflatable gear, etc.) or a good-sized ATV. The rear door lowers to the ground to work as a ramp. Removing the mirrors and maybe a tall windscreen may be required for motorcycles to clear the interior. There are a lot of internal storage spaces and tie-down points, space for two propane tanks, and a spare tire and rim.
Creature comforts include an external kitchen with a Truma slide-out 69-liter fridge/freezer combo, sink, and two-burner stove, 31 gallons of water storage, a 3-inch thick mattress, hot water on demand, LED lighting inside and out, Bluetooth audio system, large screened windows, and A/C is an option. Outside, there’s a shower, awning, quick-access kitchen and fridge, and an external ladder to get in and out. A 270-degree awning is also available. Other options include cargo boxes, more shelves, a power inverter, custom appearance wraps, and the ability to control heat or cooling remotely.
Mission says the Trail Dog can sleep four, which sounds a bit too cozy for the top tent, so we assume two campers can bunk in the cargo area once the bikes and such have been removed and parked outside. The tent section is also accessible from inside the trailer. Contact Mission Overland for quotes and more information.
