Overland Expo MTN West is fast approaching, and with it, one of our favorite portions of the show: the Showcase and DIY Vehicle Area. For those uninitiated, this is a curated space where attendees can see a gathering of unique, customized overland rigs and gather with fellow enthusiasts. It’s a section of the show meant to inspire, to awe and to connect. Attendees can see variety of build styles, learn about mods, and connect with the owners of these impressive rigs.
A little background on the Showcase and DIY Area: Folks submit applications to take part in the Showcase and DIY Area. Our team selects applications based off of their vehicle’s attributes, travel history (has it actually been out doing the dang thing??) and the backstory of the vehicle’s owners. Each of the vehicles selected are scheduled for a designated time slot during the weekend’s festivities, in which the owners will give tours of their vehicles. Attendees are welcome to walk through the area at any time during show hours, and can request a vehicle tour from any vehicle owner. It’s a great way to make new friends, share stories and learn!
In anticipation of the event, here’s a sneak peek at a small selection of the vehicles that have traveled from across the globe to meet us in Colorado. Whether you’re daydreaming about your ideal rig, want to get inspired to make some mods on what you’re currently driving or simply want to share some high fives and good vibes, the Showcase and DIY Area is a can’t-miss installation of Overland Expo Mountain West.
The Lostetters: 2010 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 5.7V8 4×4

Follow @OverlandForGood for inspiration, guides, and a glimpse into their life on the road.
About the rig:
We swapped out the factory bed for a Summit Expedition Trucks 90×80″ bed, complete with four storage boxes to keep our gear organized and easily ready. We purchased a used, non-cabover Phoenix Camper. We completely gutted it and built a layout that suits our family’s specific needs. With Arctic Turn windows and a thoughtfully designed interior, we’ve crafted a space that’s cozy, functional, and so far has been able to handle extreme weather conditions even with the pop-up feature. The pop top adds an extra 2 feet providing extra height for bunk beds and windows with lots of air flow. We can even sleep with the top down (Patagonia Protocol – Lillian on the floor Case in bed with us.) in bad weather, maintaining full access for cooking and daily activities. With a bit of prep, we can fit the whole setup into a high cube shipping container. It’s been a great home these past years.
The Lees: 994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079

About the Lees:
Mike and Deb Lee are longtime Overland Expo instructors, and recently sized-up their rig.
About the rig:
Our as yet un-named rig is a 1994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079. He came with the Van Shop modification which provides a large box (habitat) with 5 big windows. When our rig served, he would have been able to provide a variety of services to our military men and women in the field. Our new home is powered by a 3116 Cat diesel engine, a 7 speed Allison transmission and rolls down the trail on 395/85R20s. The sun and Battle Born provide our house power and we have 100gal of water to keep us out for a long time. We are in the process of making our new rig into a fully self-contained Overlanding home so come on by and check out our progress.
