Colorado Teardrop’s New Boulder Camper Trailer Promises to Ease EV Range Anxiety

Any EV owner will tell you range anxiety is a real thing. Nowhere is this more pronounced than when off-road, where range estimates go out the window and charging stations are few and far between. Colorado Teardrops has announced what may be a first for the industry – a camper trailer designed with a substantial EV-oriented battery system at its core. The design is still in its early stages, but the company has already applied for a utility patent.

The company has completed the first phase of development for their new teardrop trailer that integrates Level 2 DC-to-DC charging into the trailer. The company claims that Level 3 fast charging is in the works in the next phase of development. The prototype model, dubbed the Boulder, will have a battery capacity of 75 kWh, with a second model, the Denver will boast a capacity of 200 kWh in the future.

The prototype trailer seems to tick all the boxes in terms of layout and storage, but sadly, it doesn’t appear to have suspension oriented to anything beyond graded roads. While the design is presently targeted at the luxury travel trailer market, our hope is that future prototypes will be offered in a format oriented toward overlanding.

Even if Colorado Teardrops doesn’t ultimately head in that direction, expect to see more of this approach in the future as EV vehicles start reaching the mainstream in the off-road world. Colorado Teardrops is accepting orders for a projected delivery in the first half of 2023.
