It’s a late October morning, the leaves across the Blue Ridge Mountains are boasting their full fall colors, there’s a pleasant chill in the air, you’ve got a coffee in hand, and you’re camping just a short walk from the latest and greatest camping gear, awesome overland rigs, and plenty of new potential adventure buddies. That’s exactly what it’s like to wake up in camp at Overland Expo East in Virginia, October 23-25 in Arrington, Virginia.
You don’t need an expedition rig or a fully built overland vehicle to enjoy the weekend. We see plenty of folks sleep in the back of their SUV, set up a ground tent, or use some other DIY solution, and it’s exactly what we love. Overlanding is all about enjoying the journey, finding what works for you, and making the most of your time outside.
While plenty of people attend each Overland Expo with a Day Pass, the East event is a bit more rural, and arguably the best event to camp at. Why’s that? Beyond the perfect camping weather and mountain backdrop, we think camping at Overland Expo East to experience everything the event has to offer. Here are six reasons camping on site is a great idea.
Make the most of the weekend.
Overland Expo is always a jam-packed three days, and the biggest benefit to staying on site is that you don’t have to miss out on the action. Even if you need a break, camp is just a short walk away. You can grab a jacket, drop off that new gear you just picked up, or double-check fitment before buying some new kit, without missing a beat. This avoids the commute from staying off-site, helps you commit as much time as possible to the event, and camping provides a slower pace to really get the most out of the weekend. As simple as it sounds, camping on site is all about immersing yourself in the event, the community, and the weekend as a whole.
Meet fellow overlanders.
A huge part of Overland Expo is the community, and there’s no better way to experience it than to be a part of it. First and foremost, this is a great chance to meet fellow attendees, check out their rigs, swap tips, and enjoy some laughs. In the Overland Expo camping area, you’ll find brand new overlanders, experienced international travelers, and every shape and size of rig imaginable. Naturally, this is a great resource for your build, future trips, finding fellow adventurers, and immersing yourself in a wonderful community. We’ve literally seen people meet while camping at Overland Expo, and then head off to Alaska together. That’s the definition of making memories.
Another great opportunity to meet fellow overlanders is the aptly named Women Who Wander Networking Event on Saturday at 10 AM at the Oasis Bar & Food Court sponsored by Nexen Tire America. This is open to all attendees, and it’s always full of inspiration for overlanders from every walk of life.
The action doesn’t stop when the sun goes down.
If you’re only attending Overland Expo during the day, you’re missing out on so much! Once the exhibitor booths close on Friday, you’ll want to head to the Oasis Bar & Food Court sponsored by Nexen Tire America for Happy Hour, also sponsored by Nexen Tire America, where you’ll find good drinks, plenty of laughs, and lots of story swapping. Then hang around to get inspired by the Overland Film Festival sponsored by Midland Radio Corporation.
Saturday, the after-hours fun starts even earlier with the Camp Subaru LIVE! event with music and more at 3 PM. Then we’re back at the Oasis Bar & Food Court sponsored by Nexen Tire America for Happy Hour, brought to you by Toyo Tires. Then it’s time to win some prizes while supporting some great causes with the Overland Expo Foundation Charity Raffle. These evening events are a huge part of Overland Expo, and they belong on your “must-see” list.
Test your kit before you head out.
If you’re just getting into overlanding, Overland Expo is the place to be. You can talk to the brands, the automakers, experienced travelers, and the whole community that’s always willing to help. Plus, you’ve got hundreds of session hours covering every topic imaginable when it comes to overlanding, so you can learn during the day and apply that knowledge immediately. Camping on site gives you the perfect chance to do a shakedown run with your rig and gear without worrying about being in the middle of nowhere if something doesn’t work out.

We probably shouldn’t have a favorite in our event series, but if I had to pick, my choice would be Overland Expo East. The event takes place during my absolute favorite time of year. The exhibitor area is surrounded by camping on three sides, and the topography of the venue allows you to take it all in. I’m an early riser, and I love sitting up on the hill with my first coffee of the day in hand and watching the event come to life each morning.
And those are just a few of the reasons to camp with us at Overland Expo East 2026. While attending for the day gives you a chance to see and do a lot, there’s no better way to experience the weekend than staying on site.
