Last May, Overland Expo West saw the debut of the all-new Toyota Tacoma, including the purpose-built Trailhunter model, and later in the year, the new Land Cruiser was displayed at Overland Expo East. Continuing with that newly established tradition, Toyota brought the all-new 2025 4Runner Trailhunter to Flagstaff for Overland Expo attendees to check out. Amongst the exhibitors and campground, there were plenty of other awesome Toyotas, and we rounded up some of our favorites throughout the weekend. Presented in no particular order, here are some of our favorite Toyotas of Overland Expo West 2024.
Trailhunter 4Runner
Of course, we couldn’t leave out the recently released 2025 4Runner. Attendees got their chance to check out this new addition to the Toyota lineup. The new 4Runner shares some design points with the new Tacoma but also stands on its own. The wrap-over glass in the rear quarter window is a great throwback to previous generations, and of course, the rear window slide-down is a beloved feature. The Trailhunter trim brings 33-inch all-terrain tires, a snorkel air intake, a taller ride height, Old Man Emu suspension, and more. We can’t wait to see these on the trail and at future Overland Expos.
Tread Lightly FJ60 Land Cruiser
The Tread Lightly team does vital work. Now more than ever, we should all strive to ensure the places we love to explore are protected for generations to come. They also know how to bring people into the booth with a great classic vehicle on display. The dark tan and blacked-out color scheme gives it a timeless look, but it’s packed with modern upgrades. An ARB bumper, a Warn winch, Baja Designs lights, and a Factor 55 Flatlink handle recovery and lighting. Up top, an Eezi Awn rack provides plenty of cargo capacity for responsible adventures deep in the backcountry.
CBI Offroad 3rd Gen Tacoma
The third-generation Toyota Tacoma platform has been extremely popular since its debut, and even though the new Tacomas are hitting the streets and trails, we don’t expect the current generation to disappear overnight. This excellently built example was in the CBI Offroad & Prinsu Design Studio booth. It was decked out with steel sliders, aluminum skids, a Covert front bumper, a Prinsu Pro lightbar-equipped roof rack, a bed rack, bed MOLLE panels, lights, and more. We can’t wait to see what CBI and Prinsu develop for the new fourth-generation Tacomas.
XOverland Tacoma Trailhunter
The newly released 2024 Tacoma was on display in a number of booths, but only one of them was on a boat. Our friends at XOVERLAND had a 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter riding atop a rigid-framed inflatable pontoon. While it’s not the same Tacoma, you might remember this recent video from XOverland, it’s still awesome and true go-anywhere combo. The Trailhunter Tacoma features some great accessories from the Toyota Associated Products Program, including the ARB sports bar, a two-inch Old Man Emu lift, a raised air intake, sliders, and some Rigid lights.
Bound for Nowhere 2023 Tundra
For long-term travel, it’s tough to beat a full-size truck paired with a flatbed and camper, and that’s exactly what the seasoned nomads Owen and MAK of Bound for Nowhere have chosen for their most recent build. When we stopped by their camp they weren’t at home, bummer, but the Tundra build is obviously well thought out. For starters, it’s the TRD Off-Road package, featuring a rear locker and an extended-range fuel tank. Up front, it’s outfitted with an Addictive Desert Designs Stealth bumper, a Comeup 12.5rs winch, plenty of Baja Designs lights, and a Prinsu Cab Rack. On top of the feature-packed Norweld flatbed is a 2023 Four Wheel Camper outfitted with lights, an awning, Maxx Traxx, and exterior hot water. All of this riding on 35-inch Toyo Open Country R/T tires and a heavily modified suspension. This rig is bound for adventure.
Jonathan Hanson’s 1973 FJ40
If we had to wager which Toyota has been to the most Overland Expo events, this well-equipped FJ40 owned by Jonathan Hanson would be at the top of our list. With 330,000 miles of adventure on the odometer, this FJ is far more than a show rig. It’s equipped with Sumo low-range gears, an ARB locking rear differential, OME suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, ARB Intensity LEDs, a fridge, a 14-gallon water tank, a security drawer, and more. Undoubtedly, this rig has seen countless adventures.
Westcott Designs 2024 Land Cruiser
We got a sneak peek at the all-new Land Cruiser back at Overland Expo East 2023. Seven months later, they’re hitting the market, and we found several, including this one, decked out with some throwback details that contrast well against the Heritage Blue. It’s outfitted with a roof rack, rock sliders, and a lift kit from Westcott Designs. Around the back, a vintage Kawasaki jet ski and some appropriately colored jerry cans round out the build.
RPM Offroad Garage One-of-a-Kind Land Cruiser
As soon as we saw this Land Cruiser in the Toyo Tires booth, we knew it was unique. After speaking with the owner we learned that it’s actually a 79 Series body on a lengthened 80 Series frame. And if that isn’t cool enough, the body came from the Land Cruiser museum. Underneath, it’s outfitted with a six-inch lift, Eaton lockers, 4:88 gears, Frontrunner racks, an Ironman tent and awning, Schielman seats, a Dissent Off-road bumper, and plenty of Baja Lights. Finding unique rigs from passionate builders is one of the best parts of Overland Expo.
TAV 200 Series Land Cruiser
This 200 Series Land Cruiser was on display at the TAV booth, and every time we walked by, someone was checking it out. The chopped body paired with the Enduro camper looks a great option for extended trips, but at the same time, it’s compact enough to venture into town without worrying if the rig will fit. While the camper is compact, it features plenty of storage space, a sink, a stovetop, a fridge, and obviously a spacious bed. It even includes a pass-thru between the cab and living space. This amazing Cruiser is also rocking a Dissent Off-road bumper, Baja Designs lights, 35-inch tires, and an upgraded suspension.
